I had an appointment today for a routine cleaning, something that my insurance covers every 6 months, no issues. But instead of actually cleaning my teeth, I got hit with a surprise message saying I’d owe about $70 out of pocket because of "plan frequency." When I showed up to ask what that meant, I learned the real reason: they refused to clean my teeth unless I first got x-rays done - because my last x-ray was "a year ago," and apparently that’s now a deal-breaker. Let me be clear: the cleaning is covered, but they won’t do the cleaning unless I pay for x-rays, which are not covered. That’s like going to a car shop for a free oil change and being told they won’t touch your car until you pay for full diagnostics, even if nothing is wrong. This is an upsell tactic rather than a medically justified necessity. It’s shady, misleading, and wasteful. They could’ve made a bit of money. They wanted a lot of money, so in the end they made nothing.
