Family dentistry, originally known as Dr. Baxter Perkinson & Associates, was established in 1974 by Dr. W. Baxter Perkinson, Jr. What began as a small dental office in Bon Air has grown significantly over five decades into a prominent multi-location, multi-specialty group practice serving the greater Richmond area and Central Virginia. The name officially changed to Virginia Family Dentistry in 2013 to better reflect their team-oriented approach to comprehensive
dental care.
The practice boasts 17 convenient locations and a large team of over 70 general dentists and dental specialists. This unique multi-specialty model allows patients to receive a wide range of dental services, from routine check-ups and cleanings to complex procedures, often within the same practice or even the same building. Their services encompass
general dentistry (cleanings,
fillings, extractions, root canals,
crowns, bridges),
cosmetic dentistry (whitening,
veneers, bonding), sedation dentistry,
dental implants, wisdom teeth extractions, and specialized care in
orthodontics (
braces and Invisalign), periodontics (gum disease), endodontics (root canals), and
pediatric dentistry.

Dr. Baxter Perkinson, Jr., even after his retirement from active practice in 2017, remains a significant figure, known for his philanthropic endeavors, particularly his watercolor artistry which has raised millions for local charities, and his continued involvement with Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU), including the opening of the W. Baxter Perkinson, Jr., dental building on the VCU/MCV campus. Several of his children are also dentists within the practice, continuing the family legacy of dental care.
