Detailed Introduction

United Community and Family Services (UCFS) is a comprehensive, non-profit community health and human services organization with a long history of serving residents in southeastern Connecticut since 1877. The organization operates multiple health centers and satellite offices, with the Griswold Health Center being one of its key locations. As a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC), UCFS is committed to providing high-quality, patient-centered care to everyone, regardless of their ability to pay. The organization offers a sliding fee scale for uninsured and underinsured clients based on family size and income, and it accepts various forms of insurance, including Husky Health/Medicaid. The Griswold Health Center provides a range of integrated services to the community. These services include adult and pediatric primary care, women's health services, dental care, and extensive behavioral health and addiction services. Specifically, its behavioral health programs address individual, couple, family, and group therapy, as well as psychiatric evaluation and medication management. They offer specialized programs for various populations, including adolescents, seniors, veterans, and military families, and utilize a variety of evidence-based therapeutic approaches like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Motivational Interviewing. The center also provides services for individuals with autism and other developmental concerns, as well as gambling addiction counseling. In a notable community effort, the Griswold Health Center was built on the site of a former "brownfield," a contaminated industrial property, showcasing UCFS's commitment to revitalizing and serving its community. UCFS's mission is to eliminate health disparities and improve the well-being of the community, while its vision is to be the best choice for patient-centered health care in Eastern Connecticut. The organization's core values emphasize responsiveness, respect, integrity, collaboration, excellence, and advocacy. Beyond its clinical services, UCFS is also actively involved in community outreach, including providing support services for families and children, and offering programs like its "Power in a Shower" initiative for those experiencing homelessness.

This location is usually where I bring my daughter for medical, anddental appointments, and I have never had a problem until recently. Earlier this month I brought my daughter to the hospital for a high temperature which resulted in finding out she had the flu. After about a week I received a letter in the mail to come into Jewett City’s ucfs office for a checkup. Two days before the appointment her fever went back up and she had a bad cough, possibly pink eye, and I expressed My thoughts that there was something else wrong.

At the appointment they did all the basic things checked her breathing, blood pressure etc. I was told her her chest lungs were clear, and pink eye would go away. Now yesterday I tried to make an appointment at ucfs because her cough was worse and she she still had a fever. I talked to the nurse that had helped Tuesday and tried to make an appointment and she said the sickness would go away, and didn’t seem interested in letting me make an appointment.

They made me feel like they didn’t want to be bothered. I decided to take her to the Plainfield walk in where they checked her breathing and lungs did some swabs, an X-ray at another place, to find out she has walking pneumonia. My problem is they said she was clear, when she was clearly congested, still sick and they didn’t want to give me an appointment.

Well I've called all week to make an appointment and seems like after several voicemails giving my contact info and telling them I want to make an appointment that they don't want new patients. It would be nice if they would simply call a patient back. Now my child is out of medication and all I wanted was to see a dr to get a refill.

Thanks for nothing. Don't bother calling them, they won't call you back!

My family has been going to UCFS for our primary care since 2020 when we moved to the area. I've found that the medical staff is receptive, compassionate and helpful. Same day appointments are available for emergencies and minor ailments, and the desk staff does everything they can to expedite.

Sometimes it takes a while to get appointments, but it seems that could be due to staffing issues and a large caseload, which is no employee's fault. If you request, they will reach out and book you at the other locations if you need to be seen sooner.
