Detailed Introduction

Open Cities Health Center (OCHC) is a long-standing and respected Community health center located in St. Paul, Minnesota. Founded in 1967 in the basement of St. James AME Church, it emerged from a mission to provide healthcare to economically disadvantaged residents and populations of color in the Rondo neighborhood. Today, OCHC operates as a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC), meaning it receives federal grants to offer high-quality, comprehensive healthcare services to underserved populations, including the uninsured and underinsured. OCHC is committed to a "Health Care Home" approach, emphasizing coordinated and patient-centered care across various disciplines. Their extensive range of services includes: Medical Care: Comprehensive primary care for all ages, from newborns to seniors, covering routine check-ups, preventive care, acute and chronic condition management, immunizations, and physicals (school, camp, sports). They also offer specialty care in areas like obstetrics and gynecology, pediatrics, geriatrics, internal medicine, dermatology, ophthalmology, and podiatry. dental care: Preventive and restorative services such as cleanings, fillings, extractions, dentures, partials, crowns, and dental education. behavioral health: Counseling, therapy, and psychiatric services for adults, children, and adolescents, addressing mental health conditions, substance abuse, and trauma. This includes individual, group, and family counseling, medication management, and case management. chiropractic Care: Holistic care for various musculoskeletal issues, including injuries and chronic pain. eye care (Optometry): Eye check-ups for all ages to support vision health and detect potential conditions. Social Services: Programs designed to assist patients in accessing care and improving overall well-being. This includes initiatives like AccessPlus+ for coordinated care and Community Health Connection for outreach, education, and screenings on various health topics. A key aspect of OCHC's mission is accessibility and affordability. They operate on a sliding fee scale based on patients' financial situations, ensuring that cost is not a barrier to receiving necessary care. They accept Medical Assistance/MN Care/Medicare, private insurance, and offer flexible payment plans and reduced fees. The center also provides telehealth services for medical and behavioral health needs, further enhancing accessibility. With over 50 years of service, Open Cities Health Center has built a strong bond with the community, delivering culturally sensitive care and actively working to address health disparities. They are recognized for their compassionate and knowledgeable staff who prioritize patient health and well-being.

Open Cities Health Center is a vital community resource for compassionate, accessible dental care! As someone who’s struggled with dental anxiety, their welcoming approach put me at ease from my first visit. The clinic is clean and inclusive, with a staff that treats every patient with respect and kindness. Dr. Rodriguez is thorough yet gentle, explaining my treatment plan clearly and taking time to address my concerns.

Hygienists are patient and attentive, making cleanings far less stressful than I’d feared. They work with various insurance plans and offer financial assistance options, ensuring care is accessible to all. A practice that truly prioritizes community health—so grateful they’re here!

I've been coming here on and off since I was a kid (am 43 now). I remember going to the old location off Dale St. for shots before school started and sometimes for dental visits. I don't go as often as I should now, but boy am I glad places like this exist for low income people like me with no insurance. I came in a few years ago for a tooth extraction due to a severe toothache. Dr. Thomas Spray did a good job of pulling out the infected tooth and the pain went away. I got some shots for my interpreting job there too.

I hate needles, but the staff members who gave me shots or drew my blood were always careful and made the experience not as bad. Today I decided to pay a visit because of my horrible stomach pains. All the front desk staff and nurses are very kind. The doctor I saw today is Sam Boadu. Nice fella. I appreciate all their help.
