Detailed Introduction

The Howard University College of Dentistry (HUCD) is a historic and esteemed institution, founded in 1881, making it the fifth oldest Dental school in the United States. Located in Washington, D.C., it is an integral part of Howard University. HUCD functions as both a rigorous educational facility and a comprehensive Patient care clinic. Its core mission is to provide exceptional Dental education to qualified individuals from all backgrounds, with a particular emphasis on recruiting promising students from historically under-represented and disadvantaged populations. This commitment extends to producing compassionate and distinguished dental professionals dedicated to serving diverse communities and reducing Oral health disparities. As a patient care institution, HUCD offers a wide range of dental services to the public, delivered by student dentists under the direct supervision of experienced faculty. Services include general dentistry, oral and maxillofacial surgery, dental hygiene, and limited orthodontic services. They also provide specialized care for medically compromised patients, those with temporomandibular joint disease (TMD), and individuals with congenital or developmental jaw deformities. Emergency dental care is also available. The College is accredited by the American Dental Association (ADA) Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA) and is known for its comprehensive curriculum, which blends clinical and basic sciences, practice management, and ethics. HUCD offers a four-year Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) program, as well as postdoctoral programs in various specialties like Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Orthodontics, Pediatric Dentistry, General Practice Residency, and Advanced Education in General Dentistry (AEGD). They also offer a unique BS/DDS combined education program, allowing students to earn both degrees in six years. HUCD is committed to research and community outreach, fostering an environment where education, research, and service are intertwined. This dedication aims to not only advance dental knowledge but also to address the oral health needs of local, national, and global communities.

was surprised and disappointed by the overall academic credentials at Howard Dental school, especially when it comes to their average DAT scores. While I understand that a strong dental program isn’t solely defined by test results, the noticeably lower DAT academic average here raises serious concerns about the school’s admissions standards. It creates the impression that the institution may not be as academically rigorous as other reputable dental schools. This shortcoming can affect the quality of student peers and potentially impact the caliber of the educational environment.

For those looking for a highly competitive and academically challenging dental program, Howard’s weaker DAT averages might make you think twice before enrolling. It’s disappointing to see an institution with a historical legacy not consistently upholding the high academic benchmarks that students deserve.

I was very disappointed with the front desk person. I spent 3 hours there wasted practically ignored only to hear and see five people who came in after me get help. According to the Dept Head it was first come first served but not for me. Finally to be told that because there was no students I would not be seen. I arrived at 12:15 spoke with department head while desk staff was heading to lunch.

She told me she would look at my tooth to see if she could help me . Upon returning front desk staff proceeded to say they would only see 4 people , as she call the two men who were there when I arrived I was next , she then called three other people including a female who came 30 minutes after me up before me. She stated oh you been here before we’ll find someone for you over and over again even two young men who were there in the morning and came back. It wouldn’t not have been unheard of if for not the way she continually called people she knew came in after me as she said it when she gave me the form to complete. I knew I wasn’t going to be helped when she came back from lunch and she never acknowledged me until after she called other people before me saying oh you was here before I went to lunch.

No one answers the appointment line no one was available to assist me and I was treated very poorly and unprofessionally while all along trying to get help for my tooth. Because I wasn’t arguing being aggressive or rude doesn’t mean I didn’t deserve respect. I took my form after she randomly said we have no one left for the rest of you at 3:23pm.

March 4 - I went to the emergency room with a toothache. I paid 75 dollars March 18- They made an appointment for 2 weeks after my emergency complaint. I was diagnosed with root canal treatment. I paid $50 + $277. The first examination lasted 3 hours. an appointment was made for next week. March 25- Another appointment lasting 3 hours. It could not be finished. Rescheduled for next week April 1- Again a 3-hour appointment and again NOT FINISHED. April 8- Root canal treatment was finished after one month.

I paid another 318$ for the root canal treatment. I paid a total of $720. I was referred to another student dentist for Crown. April 14 - My appointment for April 15 was canceled the day before. April 22 - I went to the hospital again for Crown treatment. I told the professor that I had pain in my tooth. He told us to take a panoramic X-ray. I spent 4 hours in the hospital for only one X-ray. And I was sent home. After today, the student dentist never contacted me.

I texted her and asked for an appointment, but she said they don't make appointments. I explained my situation to the student dentist who did my root canal treatment and asked if she could help me with an appointment. She said she would (she didn't). This was her last message. May 16- Today I had my crown done at a local dentist. I believe in supporting student dentists but if you don't send messages to your patients, if you don't return the messages they send you . I am sure you will find it very difficult to find patients.
