Dr. A. Omar Abubaker is a distinguished oral and maxillofacial surgeon associated with VCU Health, a leading academic medical center in Richmond, Virginia. He holds the position of Professor and S. Elmer Bear Chair in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Dentistry, and also serves as Chief of the Division of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery within the Department of Surgery at the VCU School of Medicine. Additionally, he is the Chairman of the Department of Dentistry at MCV Hospital. Dr. Abubaker earned his DMD from the University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine and completed his residency training and a fellowship in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Presbyterian University Hospital in Pittsburgh. He is board-certified by both the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and the American Board of Dental Anesthesiology. He has been a faculty member at VCU School of Dentistry and VCU Medical Center since 1991, maintaining an active private practice in oral and maxillofacial surgery. Beyond his clinical and administrative roles, Dr. Abubaker is deeply committed to teaching dental students and oral and maxillofacial surgery residents. He has authored two oral and maxillofacial surgery textbooks, over 100 chapters, and more than 50 peer-reviewed scientific articles. In recent years, he has dedicated significant effort to education and research in addiction and opioid epidemic and Pain Management, having earned a Graduate Certificate in Addiction Studies. This focus stems from a personal tragedy, losing his son to an opioid overdose. He actively lectures on the dangers of narcotics and advocates for safe prescribing practices for healthcare providers, establishing the Adam Abubaker Memorial Lectureship in the VCU School of Medicine to further this mission. His specialties include the diagnosis and treatment of conditions affecting the mouth, face, head, and neck, including dentofacial anomalies, mandibular hypoplasia, facial reconstruction, and abscess/cyst drainage.
