Detailed Introduction

The University of Maryland School of Dentistry (UMSOD) holds a unique and prestigious place in the history of dentistry, being recognized as the world's first dental college. It was founded in 1840 as the Baltimore College of Dental Surgery by Drs. Horace H. Hayden and Chapin A. Harris, pioneers who envisioned a formal, science-based education as the foundation for the dental profession. UMSOD is the birthplace of the Doctor of Dental Surgery (D.D.S.) degree and has continually evolved through consolidations with other dental institutions, ultimately becoming a distinct college within the University of Maryland, Baltimore. As a prominent academic institution, UMSOD is dedicated to excellence and innovation across three core pillars: education, patient care, and research. Education: UMSOD offers a comprehensive array of educational programs, including the Doctor of Dental Surgery (D.D.S.) degree, Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees in Dental Hygiene, and various postgraduate and residency programs in advanced general dentistry and seven recognized dental specialties (Endodontics, Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology, Orthodontics, Pediatric Dentistry, Periodontics, Prosthodontics, and Oral-Maxillofacial Surgery). The curriculum emphasizes a strong foundation in general medicine alongside specialized dental skills, with students gaining extensive clinical experience under the supervision of expert faculty. The school is known for its diverse student body and a commitment to providing a contemporary dental education that also prioritizes student wellness. Patient Care: UMSOD operates extensive clinical facilities that provide a full spectrum of high-quality dental care to the public. These services include: General Dentistry: Comprehensive care for adults, provided by faculty-supervised dental students and advanced training dentists in post-doctoral clinics. Specialty Clinics: Dedicated services in Pediatric Dentistry, Orthodontics, Endodontics, Periodontics, Prosthodontics, and Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. Urgent Care/Emergency Dentistry: Walk-in services for acute pain, swelling, and urgent dental needs. Special Care and Geriatric Services: Tailored dental care for individuals with special needs, developmental or physical challenges. Faculty Practice: High-quality care provided directly by UMSOD faculty experts. UMSOD is a major provider of oral healthcare in Maryland, serving over 23,000 people annually through more than 95,000 patient visits. It is particularly recognized as the largest provider of oral healthcare for individuals living with HIV and Medicaid-eligible children in the state. Fees for services are often lower than those in private practice, making quality dental care more accessible. Research: UMSOD is a leading research institution in dental, oral, and craniofacial health. It consistently ranks among the top dental schools in the U.S. for National Institutes of Health (NIH) funding. Research programs at UMSOD are transdisciplinary, encompassing both basic and clinical research, and involve collaborations with other schools at the University of Maryland, Baltimore, as well as federal research institutions like the National Institutes of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR). Key research areas include chronic pain, infectious diseases, biomaterials, tissue engineering, and public health disparities. UMSOD's commitment to research fosters innovation and contributes significantly to advancing the scientific knowledge base of dentistry and improving overall health outcomes.

Have been here twice in the past 5 years for my children to have dental work. The staff has always been awesome. Very friendly and thorough. I was impressed with my last visit on January 19. My 3 year old son had major dental work under general anesthesia. He had an awesome team.

Since he has second degree heartblock, several precautions were taken. He had a cardiologist team on stand-by. Doctors called the next couple of days to check in on him. Couldn't have had a better experience. Thanks!!

Terrible service, very unprofessional. I was supposed to have a surgery, that one of the students was with to set up the appointment. I had to wait over a month, for no surgery. The same student was even there. I would not trust these students nor the dentists, they say it takes 3 yrs to become a dentist in my honest opinion it should be longer.

The student was in her 2nd yr & barely knew what she was doing. Also one of the dentist was very rude & sarcastic. Swear I had about 5 sets of hands in my mouth. Hope to NEVER go there again

I came here for treatment yesterday Friday the 7th, I have no dental coverage they're definitely the cheapest I could find but they were amazing from the front desk to the doctors were all great. (I hope I don't get his name wrong I was awake over 19hrs at that point 😅 but I believe his name was Javion) He is absolutely one of your best employees! He was so kind, calming & just a joy to be around. 😊 honestly all the nurses, doctors & sedation specialist (Karen, Gabriel) we're all so kind and walk you through everything.

Unfortunately I have to have all of my teeth removed (I already knew before I went) but I'm disabled with no dental coverage so I definitely don't have tens of thousands of dollars just laying around. 😅 They are doing it all (surgical removal of all teeth and sedation) for $5000, For comparison most general practice dentists wanted minimum of $1700 for 2 teeth pulled (not surgical removal just regular pull). I definitely recommend giving them a shot if you need work done.

😊 They can do same day removal but if you want sedation you have to make an appointment after your first consult. I'll come back to let ya know how it goes from here. 💛

This place is a complete waste of time to get care as a patient. I was in and out of here for over a year trying to get a crown done. It was almost comical the amount of problems that arose including the school changing my student provider multiple times, being overcharged multiple times, canceling appointments last minute after I had already taken off work to attend these appointments, having the crown not fit at least 5 different times, being given conflicting advice from different faculty and students every time I came to an appointment, and not having prominent issues addressed due to a lack of care and consistency. As a result of this negligence I have suffered permanent damage done to my teeth.

I chose to go to a regular dentist and pay full price for the work I needed and go into debt instead of trying to fight needlessly to get basic care here. This is literally just a place where students are allowed to experiment on patients without any kind of repercussions for when they mess up. I do not recommend anyone go here until this institution commits to improving patient care. I complained to the director of the school and received no compensation and hardly any sympathy for what I went through.

When I found care at an actual dental clinic, I was in and out after two appointments and all of the work I needed was done correctly. It's a joke that this institution makes you go to 20+ appointments for the same kind of work without any guarantee of success. Also their prices are ridiculous here, they're really not that much cheaper than just going to a dental clinic.
