United We Smile

United We Smile is an innovative dental clinic located at 4075 Copper Ridge Dr, Traverse City, MI 49684. It is an initiative of the United Way of Northwest Michigan, established to address the significant lack of dental care access for specific underserved populations in the region. These primary beneficiaries include children and young adults (up to 21), pregnant women, veterans, and individuals with intellectual or developmental disabilities. The clinic functions as a top-notch training facility in partnership with the University of Michigan School of Dentistry. Pre-doctoral dental interns from the University of Michigan provide dental care under the direct supervision of local volunteer dentists, who are credentialed as Adjunct Clinical Instructors for the University of Michigan School of Dentistry. Additionally, dental assisting interns from Northwestern Michigan College's Dental Assisting School provide auxiliary support. This model not only delivers much-needed dental services to the community but also provides invaluable training to the next generation of oral health professionals, particularly in treating patients with complex needs. United We Smile offers a comprehensive range of dental services, including X-rays, fillings, cleanings, extractions, dentures, partial dentures, crowns, bridges, sealants, Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF), fluoride treatments, and periodontal therapy. A core aspect of their mission is to ensure that cost is not a barrier to care. They accept all insurances, and for those without insurance, they offer assistance in applying for coverage or provide financial assistance programs to waive out-of-pocket fees when necessary. The clinic is specifically designed to provide a comfortable and accommodating environment, especially for patients with sensory issues, mobility aids, or dental anxiety. They offer features like quiet, sensory-friendly rooms, playgroups, practice time, and a trauma-informed approach to care. Beyond dental treatment, United We Smile also provides wraparound support services from community health workers, and in some cases, offers a "free" store with dental hygiene supplies, clothing, and non-perishable food items for patients in need. The "Victors for Veterans" program, in collaboration with the University of Michigan School of Dentistry, specifically offers free dental care to veterans on Fridays.
