Detailed Introduction

St. Christopher's Hospital For Children- Dentistry is the pediatric dental medicine department of St. Christopher's Hospital for Children, a nationally recognized 188-bed children's hospital in Philadelphia. The hospital is a partnership between Tower Health and Drexel University. The dentistry department is dedicated to providing comprehensive, compassionate, and kid-friendly dental care for children of all ages, from infants to young adults. The department specializes in the unique dental needs of children, including those with special health care needs, developmental or behavioral issues, craniofacial anomalies, or other medical conditions that may affect dental treatment. Their team includes pediatric dentists, periodontists, oral maxillofacial surgeons, and dental technologists who provide a wide range of services. Services offered include routine dental checkups, cleanings, fluoride treatments, sealants, and other preventive care. They also handle more complex procedures and emergencies, such as dental trauma, toothaches, cavities, gum disease, and oral surgery like wisdom teeth removal. For procedures that require it, they offer sedation or anesthesia dentistry to ensure a comfortable experience for young patients. Beyond clinical care, the department plays a crucial role in dental education. It operates a pediatric dental residency program, training graduate dentists for clinical practice and to prepare them for certification by the American Board of Pediatric dentistry. Residents are exposed to a wide variety of cases, including dental care for medically compromised children and those with special needs, and gain experience in hospital procedures and general anesthesia. The department also collaborates with the St. Christopher's Foundation for Children's Community oral health Initiatives to provide no-cost dental care to underserved children in North Philadelphia through programs like the Ronald McDonald Care Mobile. The facility is designed with children in mind, with kid-sized equipment and a staff trained to communicate with nervous young patients to create a positive and stress-free environment. They also emphasize parent and patient education to promote healthy dental habits for a lifetime.

We were referred to St Chris Dental because my son needed dental work that my children's dentist believed would be best under sedation. During our consult, Doctor Christy, went over all the the options that she thought would work, starting with the least invasive. Today, sitting in the back with Dr Christy and her helpers, I was amazed. She had such a way to calm our crazy 4 year old. She spoke so kindly and softly.

Soothing was the best way to explain it. She showed him all the tools and gave him a break when needed. This approach helped us avoid putting him to sleep for the procedure. The staff was all helpful and friendly. We will be back to complete work on the other side of his mouth!

Switched my appointment. After I specified that I needed an afternoon appointment, a month after booking the appointment I am sent a letter that they switched my appointments from 230 and 3pm to 9am and 930. I guess the message got lost in a month. Either that or it's that they don't care about thier clients.

Will see how this plays out and adjust my review accordingly. The presumtive unprofessional action take by doing this speaks pretty clearly for itself, idk maybe the dentist they were scheduled to see left them in a pickle. If so , this should be explained to your customers

My autistic 16 almost 17 year old son came here. They will not do a procedure unless you consent to them pulling teeth. He had 4 teeth pulled in June (permanent non wisdom tooth teeth) and came back today to work on his front teeth and they could not guarantee me that they wouldn't pull his front teeth days before his birthday. Everyone should be ashamed of themselves of getting a paycheck from this hospital and don't ever bring your child here unless you want them to leave with no teeth. I told the dentist to take an xray first to see how bad it is and he said xrays are 2 dimensional and you don't know until you go in.

Newsflash everyone uses xrays to determine how bad a tooth is. They are a chop shop. You have been warned.

Attended an appointment yesterday for my four year old son who unfortunately has a cavity in need of a root canal after a failed in office attempt with nitrous at his regular dentist. At first I felt the doctor did a thorough job evaluating our options (sedation and general anesthesia). Unfortunately my son is not currently a candidate for either and the only solution they could offer was a sedated/medicated temporary filling that could provide some relief until further options could be evaluated.

After multiple failed attempts (including a lap to lap exam that required me to attempt to hold my son down and have his mouth pried open that I quickly ended) we left with not solution. After a discussion with his regular dentist this morning I have been informed typically a local anesthetic is used as the filling is EXTREMELY PAINFUL ( not once did the doctor at St Christopher's disclose this) and in order to lower rick of infection the tooth should be thoroughly scraped and cleaned prior to the filling bring applied - this doctor was wiping a dry piece of gauze across my son's tooth and attempting to shove the filling in place with her fingers. Absolutely unacceptable procedures setting children up for further potentially worse issues such as infections.

I do not recommend trusting this practice with your child's dental health.
