The Maryland Foundation of Dentistry (
MFD) is a distinguished non-profit organization, formally recognized as a 501(c)(3) entity, founded in 1989. Its core mission is to address the critical need for
dental care among Maryland adults who face significant barriers due to developmental, intellectual, and/or physical disabilities and lack the financial means to afford treatment.
The MFD operates primarily by coordinating the Donated Dental Services (DDS) program. This program leverages a robust network of
volunteer dentists and dental laboratories across the state of Maryland. These dedicated professionals generously provide their services either pro bono or at significantly discounted rates, ensuring that eligible patients receive comprehensive dental care without financial burden. The services provided aim to improve overall
oral health and maintain dental function for these vulnerable individuals.
Eligibility for the MFD's program typically includes adults aged 18 and older (including veterans) who have a serious disability, impaired mental and/or physical health, and insufficient income to pay for necessary dental care. Patients with private dental insurance are generally not eligible for this specific program. The MFD emphasizes that patients must be able to keep appointments and have transportation.
The MFD's process involves a patient care coordinator who acts as a crucial liaison between patients and volunteer dentists. This coordination maximizes the efficiency of the volunteers' time and ensures that patients receive appropriate and timely care. Since its inception, the MFD has provided millions of dollars in free dental care to thousands of Maryland residents, showcasing its significant impact on the community.
