Health Wagon Inc, widely known as The Health Wagon or St. Mary's Health Wagon, is a pioneering non-profit organization established in 1980 by Sister Bernadette Kenny. Its mission is to deliver compassionate, high-quality healthcare to the medically underserved residents of the Appalachian Mountains in Southwest Virginia. What began with Sister Bernadette distributing medication from her Volkswagen Beetle has evolved into a robust network comprising multiple mobile units and stationary clinics, providing essential services across six counties (Buchanan, Dickenson, Lee, Russell, Scott, and Wise) and the city of Norton. The Health Wagon functions as a comprehensive free and charitable clinic, addressing a broad spectrum of health needs. Their services include primary and preventive care, chronic disease management (such as hypertension, diabetes, and COPD), acute disease treatment, and specialty clinics covering areas like cardiology, pulmonology, endocrinology, nephrology, dermatology, and women's health. They also provide crucial dental and vision services, including eye exams, eyeglasses, and dental procedures like cleanings, fillings, and extractions. Behavioral health services and mental health screenings are also integral to their holistic approach. Beyond direct medical care, The Health Wagon offers a variety of support services, including medication assistance, pharmacy connections, and assistance with transportation, housing, food, and utilities, aiming to alleviate socioeconomic barriers to health outcomes. They are known for their innovative use of telemedicine and telehealth, partnering with institutions like the University of Virginia to expand access to specialists in remote areas. A significant annual undertaking is the "Move Mountains Medical mission" (formerly Wise Remote Area Medical (RAM) Expedition), the largest medical outreach of its kind in the nation. During this multi-day event, thousands of volunteers and healthcare professionals provide extensive free medical, dental, and Vision care to a large number of patients, many of whom travel significant distances and wait days for services. The organization is primarily funded through grants, foundations, and private contributions, enabling them to provide care free of charge to patients who often have no other access to healthcare. They maintain a strong focus on community outreach, collaboration with various partners, and empowering individuals to achieve better health. The Health Wagon's enduring commitment has made a profound impact on the health and well-being of thousands in one of the most economically and medically disadvantaged regions in the United States.
