Detailed Introduction

Harlem United's The Nest Community Health Center is a multi-service organization in Harlem, New York, dedicated to advancing health equity and providing world-class, patient-centered care. Founded in 1988 in a church basement during the height of the HIV/AIDS epidemic, the organization initially focused on providing a compassionate community and critical care for those affected by the virus. Over the years, it has expanded its mission and services to become a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC), offering a broad range of integrated and co-located healthcare, housing, and supportive services. The Nest Community Health Center, one of Harlem United's two health centers, offers a comprehensive suite of medical services. These include all-inclusive primary care, behavioral and mental healthcare, and dental services. The center also provides specialty services in cardiology and podiatry. A key focus is on sexual health, with services ranging from HIV testing and care (including PrEP and PEP) to STI and Hepatitis B and C testing and treatment. The center is also committed to providing LGBTQ-affirming care. Beyond medical services, Harlem United's offerings extend to vital support programs such as housing assistance, harm reduction services (including syringe exchange), food and nutrition programs, and health home care management for individuals with chronic conditions. The organization's approach is deeply rooted in trauma-informed care, recognizing the complex histories of its patients and aiming to create a safe and nurturing environment. Harlem United has a strong history of advocacy and community engagement, working to eliminate health disparities and empower the vulnerable populations it serves, which include people experiencing homelessness, those with substance use disorders, and members of Black and Brown communities.

All their extensions go unanswered and mailboxes are full. It’s almost impossible to get someone on the phone. Several times I had to go in person to request a prescription refill. Because I couldn’t get anyone on the phone. An NP gave me his number. But of course, he’s non-responsive to phone calls and or text messages. This place has a serious communication problem!

My experience with the dental department and specifically dr. Frankel was beyond awful. The doctor fully lied and told me I had 7 cavities (later on I went to two different dentists and they showed me the X rays and I only had the one that I originally went there for). I was also billed for services that were never provided, BUT one of my biggest complaints is that the doctor took about 2h to remove a cavity and she couldn't even finish the job, once I went to another dentist they showed me how the cavity was still left inside my tooth and was left untreated after having me on the chair for two hours and IN PAIN and billing me for it.

There were some other issues but those were the main ones. I never got answers from front desk when I contacted them either. Beyond sad and frustrating experience.

The doctors I saw were great, the staff in the call center are horrible, will purposely drop calls and leave you waiting for over an hour. I’ve been trying to contact them since Monday because I forgot the date of my appointment

From my personal experience as someone in recovery, I would not recommend this hospital to anyone. I sought help there for six months for my mental health and made barely any progress. They refused to listen to me and constantly judged me as I advocated for myself. While the therapists did their best, it all felt like a waste of time. Best of luck
